A hybrid flower is produced when two flowers of distinct species are mated through human manipulation. When creating hybrid flowers, flower growers select the finest flowers and pollinate them manually to produce offspring with certain desired characteristics. This can result in flowers with colors and bloom lives that are different from their parent flowers.
Flower breeders create hybrid flowers for many reasons. Usually, they do so to produce flowers of specific colors, so that they can enhance the aesthetics of gardens. They can produce roses, tulips, pansies, cosmos, and other types of flowers that display colors that are different from their natural colors. Some hybrid flowers also have new markings on them. Through hybridization, flower breeders can also extend the bloom lives of flowers, and make them more resistant to the weather and diseases. Hybrid flowers are produced by placing pollen of father plants on the stigmas of mother plants. Flower breeders usually do this on the first day of bloom, because this is the time when stigmas are most receptive. After the pollen is placed on the stigmas, the mother flower will be covered with cheesecloth until the seed pods ripen.
The success of flower hybridization has opened up new possibilities for horticultural and biological science. Through experimentation with hybrid flowers, scientists have gained a better insight into the genetic and growth characteristics of plants, and they can create more hybrid plants that are beneficial to human health. Flower hybridization also benefits consumers because it gives them more extensive varieties of flowers to choose from. Nonetheless, hybrid flowers are usually more expensive than ordinary flowers.
